About Julius Cornelis Heemelaar
Julius is a cardiologist in training, specializing in cardio-oncology. He obtained his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine VU Amsterdam (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and completed postdoctoral cardio-oncology fellowships at Leiden University Medical Center (Leiden, The Netherlands) in the group of Louisa Antoni MD, PhD and at Mass General Hospital-Harvard Medical School in Boston (MA, USA) in the group of Tomas Neilan MD, MPH. His research interests include leveraging big data analytics and artificial intelligence, particularly in natural language processing, to address cardio-oncology questions.
He will defend his thesis entitled “The changing landscape of cardio-oncology research: usual suspects, novel exposures, and the dawn of artificial intelligence” in the spring of 2024. Currently, Julius is a
medical resident at the intensive hematology department of the OLVG Hospital in Amsterdam and has been accepted as a cardiology fellow at Leiden University Medical Center. He is also an apprentice
member of the Research Working Group at ICOS.
