In a heartbreaking moment amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine, a Shahed drone struck the National Institute of Cardiology in Kyiv during a massive assault of missiles and drones on the city. The attack caused a large fire, tragically injured both a patient and a member of the medical staff, and left significant parts of the building unusable.
Among the hardest-hit areas was the Cardio-Oncology Center, which has long served as a lifeline for cancer patients whose treatments require specialized cardiac care.
“The blast wave shattered windows and destroyed much of our equipment — including our ultrasound machine,” shared Dr. Sergey Kozhukhov, the Center’s director. “Without it, we are unable to provide essential diagnostic care to our patients, many of whom are in critical condition.”
Despite the immense damage and the ongoing chaos around them, Dr. Kozhukhov and his dedicated team continued their work. Then came an extraordinary response from across the world.

Their swift action provided not just equipment, but much-needed hope

After his urgent plea to the International Cardio-Oncology Society and the global community, American colleagues responded immediately — sending two portable ultrasound systems to Kyiv for temporary use (with a third on the way). Their swift action provided not just equipment, but much needed hope.
“This timely assistance is invaluable,” wrote Dr. Kozhukhov. “Your partnership reminds us that even in the darkest moments, we are not alone. Your help allows us to continue caring for patients when they need it most.”
The destruction is real and ongoing. The need — for equipment, for safety, for international solidarity — remains urgent. Yet in the wake of a devastating attack, this act of compassion has made a profound difference.
To everyone who stepped in with support, connection, or equipment: thank you. You have not only restored essential tools — you’ve affirmed that humanity still bridges borders, even in times of war.
How to Help
If you or your organization can provide additional support — medical equipment, repair resources, or logistical guidance — please reach out.
Every act of solidarity strengthens the resolve of those on the front lines of care. Dr. Kozhukhov’s message concludes with hope: “Your support, compassion, and solidarity allow us to continue. We will not stop. Thank you for standing with us.”
