The cardio-oncology community is celebrating an important moment in the career of Dr. Sebastian Szmit, whose two decades of leadership and clinical advancement have now been honored at the highest scientific and national levels in Poland. 

A Distinguished Career Recognized 

For 20 years, Dr. Szmit has helped shape the field of cardio-oncology, elevating its scientific rigor and expanding its clinical impact. His long-standing contributions were recently affirmed by the Council of Scientific Excellence, which issued a highly positive evaluation recognizing his scientific achievements and service. 

As President of the International Cardio-Oncology Society (IC-OS) Poland chapter, Dr. Szmit has played a central role in strengthening international collaboration and building Poland’s reputation as a leader in cardio-oncology research and clinical practice.

Appointment as Professor of Medicine 

This season of recognition reached a historic peak on February 18, 2026, when the President of the Republic of Poland signed the official act nominating Dr. Szmit as Professor of Medicine— one of the highest academic honors in the country. 

One week later, on February 25, 2026, the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, personally presented Dr. Szmit with the act of nomination during a formal ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw. 

It was a moment marked by dignity, gratitude, and recognition of a career devoted to advancing patient care at the intersection of cardiology and oncology. 

A Significant Moment for IC-OS and the Global Community

Dr. Szmit’s professorship is more than a personal milestone—it is a moment of celebration for the entire international cardio-oncology community. His work has helped set global standards, foster multidisciplinary collaboration, and promote scientific excellence within this rapidly growing field. 

As IC-OS continues expanding its mission to improve the cardiovascular care of cancer patients worldwide, leaders like Dr. Szmit exemplify the dedication, expertise, and compassion that move the field forward.
